U.S. Gold Buffalos

(2006 - Current)

The American Gold Buffalo was introduced in 2006 as the first .9999 fine (24-karat) gold bullion coin ever issued by the United States Mint. The design is based on the classic Buffalo Nickel created by James Earle Fraser in 1913.

The obverse features a right-facing Native American portrait, while the reverse depicts an American bison standing on a mound. Unlike the American Gold Eagle (which is 22-karat gold), the Gold Buffalo is struck in 99.99% pure gold, appealing to investors who prefer higher purity bullion.

The standard issue contains one troy ounce of gold, with fractional sizes offered in select years. Produced in bullion and proof formats, the American Gold Buffalo combines one of the most recognizable classic U.S. coin designs with modern high-purity gold content, making it a popular choice among both collectors and bullion investors.

Two United States $1 coins, one featuring a Native American profile and the other depicting a buffalo.
